- (fl. 12th-11 th cent BCE)Israelite judge, son of Manoah of the tribe of Dan (Judges 13-16). He was a Nazirite of enormous strength, but when his mistress Delilah, revealed the secret of his strength as lying in his hair, he fell into the hands of the Philistines. His hair was cut, his eyes were put out, and he was forced to turn the prison mill. When he was taken to Gaza to be mocked for the enter-tainment of Philistines at a festival, his strength returned to him and he destroyed the palace, killing all those assembled there.
